“Where is my magic?”

frustrated pianist
  • “I hear it and see it in others, why not me?”
  • “Why is music a test of my value?”
  • “Why isn’t it an affirmation of my freedom and joy?”

If this has been your story, this course will absolutely change your relationship to your instrument, your music, and therefore, your life!

Singers, you’ll find a power within you that you once thought was possible but may have given up on a long time ago.

Painters, I can guide you to paint from a state where you observe your hand gracefully moving the brush on the canvas, freeing you from the burden of judgment.

Dancers, I will guide you to observe as you allow your body to dance, freeing it from the control of your ego. I'll assist you in stepping aside from making it happen and watching as the body moves.

Music becomes the safe space you always hoped it would be.

From The Space, every note you play is the most beautiful sound you ever heard.

Do you struggle with the feelings of self-loathing and despair, and a screaming inner voice that says,

“I’m not good enough, I don’t have enough talent, I haven’t worked hard enough, and my personal biography does not entitle me to pursue an artistic path.”?

If that sounds familiar, then this is for you

Whether you are:

  • a professional musician fighting yourself,  looking for inspiration but rarely finding it ...
  • a student who has loved music more before you went to school and now you are completely overwhelmed…
  • a music lover who played an instrument when you were younger, stopped, and have said for years, “I wish I never stopped taking those lessons”.
  • seeking the love of music after years of not finding it, coming back to playing
  • after injury, or years of other obligations (or even discovering this new joy for the very first time!)

How it impacted them...

"This class has had a profound impact on my playing and on my music but more importantly it has had such a positive impact on every other aspect of my life and how I’m carrying myself in the world."

- Trevin (Banjo player, Nebraska)

" I wanted to share with you my deep appreciation for what you have provided. The meditations help me feel good inside in a way never before experienced. Lately, music has become alive for me again and I credit a great deal of this to the benefit coming from your influence. Thanks for sharing your “music”."

- Eric (Guitarist, Utah)

andrew

"I've been committing to the exercises pretty much daily and am amazed with the results! Many of the things you've shown me also aligned to my spiritual path in a beautiful way, even though it's probably quite different from yours."

- Andrew (Guitarist, Malaysia)

"As a Berklee professor, I am one of the most wounded (as Kenny calls teachers) and have spent much of my performing career trying to sound good. This leads to defining yourself by how well you think you play. And it makes you overwhelmed by how much you think you still need to master, and how the older you get the less time you have. Watching yourself breathe and being in the space silences the negative chatter in your head. What I discovered is that while focusing on something else I was able to allow my hands to play what they know and be amazed at the sound. This method is the best thing I've ever done as a musician.  I'm seeing my life and music in a new light."

- Suzanne (Jazz Pianist, Composer, Professor, Boston)

"I’d had those moments when my cello seemed to play itself while I effortlessly conversed with other musicians. The only predictable thing about those moments is that the more I hope for them the less likely they are to arrive. There is no quick fix, but now I’m cultivating a different approach. Through Kenny’s beautiful, simple method—and the patience and support he embodies—I’m learning to get the doubting mediator out of the way of the master musician and let her soar."

- Catherine (Cellist, educator, Boston)

The fact you're here tells me your heart really desires the connection. You know it's there and seeks a way in.

But … as much as you love it, the beauty is there from a distance and it dries up, the closer you get.

Will this ever change in my lifetime?

Or is the joy of music just a gift to others and not me?

Why these simple ideas are so elusive: Ego

Ways in which Ego ruins preparation:

  • Impatience
  • Overwhelmed
  • Lack of focus
  • Being inflexible and rigid
  • Sense of futility
  • Flailing from topic to topic
  • Not hanging in long enough to cause the change in one’s playing.

Ways in which Ego ruins performance:

  • Expectations
  • Self-judgment
  • Low self-esteem
  • Comparing oneself to others
  • Needing to prove one’s value by the level of one’s performance,

Research reported to Berklee College Of Music that 70% of students were depressed, unsatisfied, anxious, overwhelmed (big one!) negative, pessimistic, developing, or have developed physical harm as a result.

Something you need to know...

You can never hurt yourself by playing an instrument.
You can only hurt yourself trying to play an instrument!

Let me explain: When we try to play the instrument we ignore the needs of the body and are tormented by our mind. We also miss how the body wants to play the instrument. That is the most efficient way for that person to get the most out of their particular body.

The Answer?

The Space.

Playing from the space, one sees their thoughts trying to sabotage or shrink their performance but one doesn’t have to react to those thoughts. The Space is a nondenominational term for that seat of inspiration, the thing that illuminates the greatest performances. When one experiences that, even virtuosity becomes subservient to the spirit.

And... It can be taught

Effortless Mastery exercises at the instrument can reprogram the musician to instinctively connect with the inner self by touching the instrument. The meaning of this will correspond to the spiritual, religious, or philosophical beliefs of the musician.

Or you will just feel the inner love and connection you’ve hungered for! Even the fun!

That is why we simply refer to it as The Space.

All THIS ⤴

is not just possible, it will happen!

You will deprogram and reprogram the mind to welcome the touch and the sound of every note we play. Leaving our negative history in the rearview mirror.

I’m ready to Live Effortless Mastery

Luminaries that worked with me:

James Valentine - guitarist of Maroon 5 : ⤵

“I was first to read Effortless Mastery in the late nineties and then later on in life was lucky enough to work with Mr. Werner personally. Effortless Mastery has been a game-changer for my performance and writing. At all different levels, musicians get lost in negative self-talk as they compare their abilities against unrealistic expectations. Mr. Werner has figured out some great antidotes to these self-defeating habits. Whenever I need to recalibrate and start enjoying making music again, I check back in with Effortless Mastery."

Chandrika Tandon - Indian American businesswoman and Grammy-nominated artist: ⤵

The notion of EM defines how you can redefine yourself to be a great performer. It is to bring out what you are meant to bring out at that moment in time and that is a very profound concept that marries technique, the thought, the mind and will make a profound change in the whole person. It's not a musical technique, but a different entree point into re-engineering the whole person.

Rachel Z - top of the line pianist in the jazz and rock world : ⤵

I was suffering from performance anxiety- at high profile gigs and video shoots, I experienced a constant sense of dread instead of joy... a loss of pleasure at the instrument, and as a result a complete lack of energy to practice because it was too painful to deal with the critic. After only a few lessons with Kenny, I had several successful recording sessions. I was no longer making excuses for why I needed to “come back” and overdub a “better” solo. Instead, I connected, listened, and stayed in the flow by letting go of the result and staying in the moment, remembering the breath and the feeling of the hands dancing on the keys.

I am feeling freer at the piano than I ever have. I can actually think, feel, and breathe in the music I am playing! The steps of Effortless Mastery allow me to focus on the music- and to connect with the space of source energy and light energy and let go of the ego, anger, and fear that was increasingly taking over as my primary motivators. Kenny’s course is literally helping me get out of my own way and enjoy peaceful and healing moments at the piano!

But before I tell you more about the freedom you will attain in this program….

Let’s take another look at what’s held you back all your life in music.

3 key struggles holding you back

#1 "I have such expectations of what I think I should be able to play that I immediately disappoint myself"

You look at your instrument and a shadow comes over your spirit. Maybe even a feeling of dread, or something you need to prove. To whom? Yourself? So you walk by the room where the instrument is, but it’s not a good feeling. You know something is missing.

If you do manage to sit down and play or practice, your mind immediately gets ahead of your body and cannot possibly satisfy the demands of the ego.

So you stumble and rush, make mistakes, lose the form, or expose the mistakes of the classical piece you are practicing. Practicing degenerates into "survival" playing that is you merely trying to satisfy your insecurity. Can I play? Am I a player? Am I even worthy to be touching this instrument? There is no joy to your playing or practicing. This is what I call Sonic Narcissism.

Where did you learn to be so self-absorbed, so self-critical? Unfortunately, it is most likely from your first teacher or any of your teachers and very likely your university education, which places more emphasis on quantity than quality. There was never any time to obtain ownership!

As the material was introduced and came and went without enough time to master it, the dominant feeling was that of ineptitude. Leading to the idea that I guess I’m not as talented as I thought I was. The way it was presented greatly contributed to the feeling of inferiority.”

Kenny Werner: “All these negative implants come from the conscious mind, what you need is a daily practice of touching the instrument from the pure light of reality. Changing the polarity from negative to positive. The touch of the instrument lets you into the world of sound and the mind is able to receive it. And this can work for anyone, even the non-player.

#2 "When I play by myself, everything flows easily but when I play in front of people, everything suddenly gets hard to do."

Think about a time when it was so important for you to play well. How did you play? Most people use the thumbs-down sign. Now think about a time when it didn’t matter and for some reason you didn’t care how well you played, or you were in the practice rooms by yourself. How did you play then? Almost everyone says; Better! 👍

Great! Now that I’ve pointed that out, you’re never gonna care again, right?

But you know you cannot do that. Even if you know it is in your best interests, you cannot stop caring. No more than 3 bars will go by, before you are tremendously attached, again. Asking yourself, “how good do I sound?”

It would be so great if, at that exact moment when you pressured yourself to play better, you did! If you played better, by pressuring yourself to play better: I’d recommend it! But you don’t. At that exact moment, you play worse! So how do you choose not to pressure yourself to play better?

The Answer?

Deprogramming and reprogramming the mind. That is what we do for 12 weeks. Until you permanently leave that kind of self-destructive thinking behind.

Actually, permanence is a bit down the line. But, it is guaranteed that you'll have incrementally replaced crippling self criticism with self acceptance. That creates a new touch, a new connection, a new magnetic relationship to your instrument.

#3 "I have had peak experiences and then they have gone away."

You can recall a gig or a song in an evening where you were in the space and the music was just ‘happening’, right? In fact, it was so special compared with other moments, that you still remember where you were and who you were playing with. There are just a few problems with that …

It always happened when you weren’t expecting it. You could never plan to have that experience. And most cruelly… it never happens when you want to show it to others. And if you did have a gig like that, how was the next gig? Terrible!

The reason that the first gig was so magical was that you had no expectations. But the next gig was ruined because you expected to play as well as the first gig!

Trying to satisfy these desires is how a musician can do anywhere from slight to severe damage to their body. But….

You can never hurt yourself playing a musical instrument,
you can only hurt yourself trying to play an instrument.

In Effortless Mastery, we never try to play music. We let music play while we watch!

Learning the lessons of Effortless Mastery has had unexpected effects on people in other areas besides music. There is no telling how life-changing they may be.

This is a testimonial from a retired Army Nurse.

"Hello Kenny, I read Effortless Mastery and enjoyed it immensely. I a budding musician with an interesting story. About 8 years ago, I started drumming as a hobby, now I a student in a small college studying Jazz percussion. It has not been easy for, few reasons. First, I am a retired Army Nurse with many memories that haunt my dreams at times. I did two Iraq tours and cared for the sick and wounded until I couldn't do it anymore. I retired from the military and took the GI Bill and was accepted to the College of Charleston. I am a 53-year-old College Junior with a Master's Degree in Trauma and Critical Care Nursing.

The reason I am writing tonight is I have an ensemble audition tomorrow. We are going to play: Take the A-Train. I just got finished listening to Meditation 1. I want very much to care how I sound, or to at least think that I am how I sound. I can fill up with fear in seconds.

My bottom line is "thank you", and I will repeat it until I believe it, "I am great. I am a master."

Truly, these lessons are life-changing. We were astounded to get this email from a man with stage 4 cancer.

" Your book! I found your book in KONA, Hawaii, 2008.. for the month I was there, I read & reread your book realizing what I had missed in my life. At the time I didn't realize I had cancer... When I got home I found out I was at stage four...a dead man. LOL. I truly believe that between your book and GOD I now find myself 4 years in remission.

Unfortunately, I was a comeback trumpet player, playing community band, a rock band, had developed a nice jazz trio, getting a few gigs here and there. Then because of my Radiation treatments my front teeth began to crumble, lips were unable to vibrate.. after struggling for 4 years I have given up .. it's broken my heart. BUT I'm back to reading your inspiring book. I have switched to PIANO...lol

Famous I'll never be...but I'm nothing without music. By the way, I find I play better in the dark, relaxed, and just me. Thanks again for the inspiration..Ever get to California..love to meet you."

Just imagine if you could…

  • Play your instrument at any time of the day or night and receive the joy of its touch. Or, for a vocalist, the joy of your own voice.
  • Become content, even delighted with what you are able to play today.
  • From that grateful, balanced mind be able to approach for the first time, an incremental approach to improving your level of play.

One of the big misunderstandings:

If I’m unhappy enough with my playing it will drive me to improve.

It’s just the opposite...

Enjoying where you are at, allows you to increase in a gentle and supportive way, where you want to go with your music.

Let’s make that start today – enter Living Effortless Mastery

Become your own best ally. Not only can it be practiced, it can be achieved.

Many of you know me from my book Effortless Mastery,
but here is a little more info on who I am.

I'm Kenny Werner.

A world-renowned pianist and composer and a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, a Grammy-nominated artist and has won multiple awards. Throughout my career, I have performed with many of the greatest performing artists of my time.

Besides my playing I am known for my 1996 book Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within, which began an odyssey of being invited to lecture and teach musicians all over the world to "liberate the master musician within” and reclaim their love and power in music. In 2014, twenty years after publishing the book that sold over 150,000 copies, I became the artistic director of Effortless Mastery Institute at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Since the publishing of my book to this day, I have received letters and emails thanking me for the life-changing experience countless musicians, artists of all kinds, (even business people!) have received from reading Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within.

This course is not like many people who are developing courses online right now. This process didn’t start during the pandemic.

“I’ve been teaching Effortless Mastery for the last 30 years, but I’ve honed it in as an official course for the last 7 years at Berklee College of Music. It has become sharper and more effective than ever through having to do it on Zoom. A blessing in disguise! You will not be guinea pigs for this course, you will receive the benefits of the full power of these practices. It works!"

Music is yours. Music loves you! To make a sound is to surrender to your own greatness!

What would that be worth to you?

Are you ready?
Let’s get started ⤵

Presenting the second official class of

Living Effortless Mastery

Inside "living Effortless Mastery"...

  • You’ll learn how to easily access The Space.
  • Learn to practice The Space in any and all circumstances throughout your day. You will see how portable and accessible it is.
  • You will then learn how to fix your attention on The Space without thinking and feel the most authentic connection to your instrument. (That includes the voice!)
  • During the course, Kenny will impart many personal tips on how to structure your practicing and will share many stories of how to escape performance anxiety in performance.
  • Kenny will often play to demonstrate the full power and inspiration of playing from The Space.

Learn to play with effortless joy and confidence, *every time* you pick up your instrument (even under pressure!)

Bonus

We will send you off with exclusive videos that you can refer to again and again where Kenny will show you exactly how to do these practices for the rest of your life and deepen the transformation.

How many thoughts, expectations, priorities, etc. arise in your mind at the thought of playing your instrument?

Does that feeling radiate stronger and stronger as you get closer to playing it?

"I’ll show you how to touch the instrument, completely devoid of consequences, and receive the sound you make unconditionally!"

You will find yourself attracted to your instrument more and more, week after week during the Effortless Mastery course this summer.

The first two steps will have you playing everything you already played better than you ever played it.

Step 1

Playing the instrument from The Space, one note at a time. Literally reprogramming yourself to stay out of the way and let the body play the instrument or produce the sound. This is more mental than musical. That’s why you’ve never been able to do it. You can’t be saved from your doubts and self judgement in music, from music. In this exercise, if you lose the space, you drop your hands, put down the instrument, whatever the case may be. This powerful action of detaching from the instrument strengthens your ability to keep your mind out of the way and let the music play!

Step 2

From The Space, we turn up the heat. You commit yourself to moving around on the instrument without interruption of your mind. No doubts, no fears, just pure movement on the instrument. This is done in several ways. Fast. slow, chords (or clusters), different scenarios that would bring out all your self editing traits. But what does the mind do? it receives the sound without judgement. Now you are experiencing pure sound and movement, the raw consciousness that makes music flow. But doing it without the ruses of the mind makes you feel like you’re riding a bike without pedaling, without effort!

Some call this “Free Music”

But that name would be inaccurate. The fact is that “Free Music” doesn’t make you free.
There is only one kind of free music…

Music Free From Self Judgement!

After 12 weeks, you will have learned that there is never a reason to deny yourself the freedom and joy of playing your instrument. The only thing that can hold you back now is not knowing the material. That will give your practicing life a whole new meaning.

Is there any instrument that it can’t relate to?

No. It’s never a question of the instrument, even if it’s the human voice. It’s programming oneself to be free of self-judgment, doubts, fears, and expectations. On any instrument, it’s this simple. The body plays the instrument, the mind receives the sound. No more interference from the ego telling you what you can and cannot do.

I’m not as experienced (or as talented?!) as many people – is this program for me?

Absolutely! Truthfully you don’t know how talented you are. You have been laboring under the assumption that music is difficult and that you are not worthy of it. When you get into The Space you are going to have the delightful experience of the sound of the instrument coming to you, also coming through you. At that point, it’s no longer a matter of talent, it’s a matter of soul satisfaction, and there is no one on earth that doesn’t deserve that.

I’m a professional performer with many years of experience – is this program for me?

Yes. Many years surviving probably, but what has been the pay-off? Are you always dissatisfied? Are you like so many professional musicians, never really happy with yourself or your level of playing? That’s so common, you can almost say it’s the majority of musicians. That’s why the book, Effortless Mastery was so incredibly successful. It spoke to that silent majority that had already given up hope that music would be anything more than a means of earning a living, the dream of ecstatic creativity long ago abandoned. But that dream is as accessible as you are willing to let it be by letting go of your thoughts and focusing on The Space!

How much time will it take each day?

5 - 15 minutes three times a day. Interrupt whatever you are doing, whatever drama you are experiencing. Snap into The Space and connect with your voice, your instrument

Ideally, it’s good to do it in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. In the morning when you are fresh, in the afternoon when you are overwhelmed, and in the evening when you are too tired to care about growing anymore.  You want to know that at any point you can snap into The Space and experience your own higher self and connect that self to your instrument.

Is it even possible to learn such valuable freedom online?

Yes! I think if there is one gift that we have gotten from the pandemic, one thing I’ve learned from this unique and tragic situation, it’s how to communicate these lessons with pinpoint accuracy that was never called for when I taught in person. I can honestly say that these lessons are more powerful in this format than they were when I was teaching in the room.

What do I need?

Be rested if possible. Be ready to focus, be ready to let go, most importantly, be ready to breathe. Have your instrument very close.

Other than that, you will use your laptop or tablet, with a simple webcam connected to a desktop. Your internet connection tends to be more important than your video equipment. You could choose to use an external microphone, which will improve your sound quality. All live sessions use either Zoom or a web browser and all archived course materials will live on our Teachable platform.

Any other questions?

It's time to choose ...

You know, there are many musicians who will read this, overthink it and just pass the chance to really make this life change. Maybe they will imagine it will just happen by itself, someday. But the older musician can assure you that it never just happens. The world believes that some of us have it and some of us don’t.

The fact is all of us have it. Some of us know it, and some of us don’t. So if we all have it, why is it missing from most of us?

Because we are programmable beings and we are currently programmed to believe that we are nothing special as musicians and the magic of music was not supposed to visit us.

With the practices of Effortless Mastery, first, we deprogram that, fall into the Space of nothing but possibilities and reprogram unconditional love and enjoyment for any sound we make.

The harsh reality is, if you don’t choose to take action and make a change, then how can you expect things to improve?

If you keep doing exactly what you’ve been doing for the past year, 5 years, 20 years or more and your playing hasn’t shifted off of that plateau...

How can you expect the next year, 5 or 20 years to be any different?

I’m not trying to make you feel bad, I promise!

I just know that sometimes the best way to improve things in life is to understand …

See What Other's Are Saying...

Kenny’s method helps to free the fear and the inner critical demons that block our ability to find our own unique feel, instead of analyzing what we do in relation to our favorite musicians. I wanted to find my own personal voice as a jazz artist. Kenny and Effortless Mastery were the keys for me…I love the feeling of inventing the music as I go along and Kenny’s method helped me break the BS barrier. Kenny’s exercises will get you in touch with your own uniqueness. Effortless Mastery is simple, direct, perfect… and profound.

— HERB ALPERT

Many years ago I heard him playing with Toots Thielemans and observed that Kenny embodied many of the qualities he wrote about. There are many musicians that manifest that level of virtuosity and inspiration, but Kenny has the rare ability to explain ways of walking out of the shadows of self-limitation and into the possibilities of joy and self-expression in music.
