- It's not a broad issue like talent, it's a method. Teachers don't know how to get you from not playing lines to playing lines. What's most misunderstood is the time it takes to achieve it.
- Our course will give the best opportunity to learn how to construct lines. An absolute necessity, obviously, if you have the hope of actually playing lines. You practice being where you're at, at this moment.
- Those of you that have studied with me know that I don't overstate it when I say I will show you how to understand every mystery about linear playing as you've never known before.
- You will learn the philosophy of Effortless Mastery, which is a companion to everything I teach. It's unavoidable because no matter how clear the work is that needs to be done, a mindset of detachment and consistency is essential to practice the right stuff the right way.
I searched for that answer for a lot of things in music. When Bill Evans played in Boston, I saw him every night. He was always a harmonic genius. When McCoy Tyner played in Boston, I saw him every night. Not one night, but every night he was the most burning linear pianist I had ever heard. I have many more examples, but the question is always the same;
why are they on that level every night?
I finally found the answer:
You can't do something on that level every night. No matter how complex and amazing it seems to others, for the player...
You can study with the greatest players but they can't quite tell you what to do so that you will be playing great lines.
In 10 weeks, you’ll have a complete understanding of the anatomy of any line through any chords. To be able to play this language, it takes as long as it takes, which is why I'll be preaching Patience, Patience, Patience...!
Playing on the changes is a language, but more difficult than any verbal language because it has to be played in time.

So in our class, we will be working on your Zen as much as we are on your lines.
It's not something you fight with, it's something you surrender to.
Listen to Charlie parker, all he has to do is wiggle his fingers, and out comes perfect lines!
This is your opportunity, this course will not happen again for at least another year. So in the immortal words of Charlie Parker,
Now's The Time

We'll begin on Thursday, August 15th, 3-5 pm Eastern time, and will go until October 17th, 2024. That's 10 weeks. Each week, we'll host a 2-hour live zoom session. Also, there will be the opportunity to share your experiences on our closed Circle group and Teachable platform where videos and other materials will be posted.
All sessions are recorded so that if one doesn't work for your schedule, you can watch it back later! If you fail to grasp any aspect of this, you will have access to all archived materials, including the video library and your individual and group sessions, forever.
If you experiment with this system of lines for even 15 minutes a day, or as many days as you are willing, will teach you the language.
I wouldn't try this with a shofar or digeridoo but any instrument that can play melodies can play lines.
I’m not as experienced (or as talented?!) as many people – is this program for me?
It could be! You may or may not play the lines, but you will definitely understand how to construct them.
Yes! I think if there is one gift that we have gotten from the pandemic, one thing I’ve learned from this unique situation, it’s how to communicate these lessons with pinpoint accuracy. I can honestly say that these lessons are more powerful in this format than they were when I was teaching in the room.
But this is your responsibility: spend 15 minutes a day experimenting with this system, even if you miss days, let it be a regular occurrence, like brushing your teeth. 15 minutes most days of experimenting with this will create take you from understanding perfect lines and constructing them. The only way to miss it, is to not do it. And why would you do that?
The real work of 'lines becoming you' will take as long as it takes. But I will show you how to never stop.
I’m a professional performer with many years of experience – is this program for me?
It could be. If you are tired of stabbing in the dark or barely holding on when you are soloing, this program is for you!
You will use your laptop or tablet, with a simple webcam connected to a desktop. Your internet connection tends to be more important than your video equipment. You could choose to use an external microphone, which will improve your sound quality. All live sessions use either Zoom or a web browser and all archived course materials will live on our google drive and dropbox.
As soon as you click to ‘Enter Lines Demystified', you’ll be taken to a sign-up page, where we’ll ask for your payment details. After that, we’ll send you a welcome email to say Congrats! In that email, you’ll receive access to a welcome portal with more information, links to everything, etc. We’ll tune in live via Zoom each week for all of our classes. Plus, you’ll be invited to join us in the Circle community, where you can introduce yourself right away and start getting to know your fellow searchers!

a world-renowned pianist and composer and a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, a Grammy-nominated artist, and have won multiple awards. Throughout my career, I have performed with many of the greatest performing artists of my time, including Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, Mel Lewis, Eddie Gomez, Ron Carter, Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Toots Thielemans, and Charlie Haden. My working quintets in the 21st Century have featured David Sanchez, Randy Brecker, Antonio Sanchez, Brian Blade, Scott Colley, and John Patitucci, among others. I have put out over 30 CDs as a leader and have composed for many of the major Jazz and Symphony Orchestras around the world, including the BBC Orchestra.
Besides my playing I am known for my 1996 book Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within, which began an odyssey of being invited to lecture and teach musicians all over the world to "liberate the master musician within” and reclaim their love and power in music. In 2014, twenty years after publishing the book that sold over 150,000 copies, I became the artistic director of Effortless Mastery Institute at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Many years ago I heard him playing with Toots Thielemans and observed that Kenny embodied many of the qualities he wrote about. There are many musicians that manifest that level of virtuosity and inspiration, but Kenny has the rare ability to explain ways of walking out of the shadows of self-limitation and into the possibilities of joy and self-expression in music.
